 The ICBIE Artists

THE THEATER

The theater of the ICBIE EUROPA—that will probably be entitled to Carlo Goldoni or, thanks to a suggestion by Luigi Serafini, La Scala Felice (“the happy La Scala”)—is at the moment only an empty piece of land behind the main building that is the seat of the association. The space already belongs to the Institute, but, to attain a minimal functionality, it needs considerable work.

Some pictures of the theater space conditions today

This area will certainly be used, even if at a minimum level, for the odd event that requires only an open space, while we wait for the day when adequate public support, or a substantial private donation, or the two together, can permit work on a real theater: simple, elegant, functional and flexible, for a wide variety of events.  A space in Ribeira that can add luster to the local community, facilitate and promote access to the social strata of the underprivileged, becoming the heart of Cidade Baixa’s cultural life and that of the city of Salvador in general.

With this idea in mind, we appeal to all people who love theater, cinema, dance and music, associates and non-associates, Brazilian and European, to put pressure on the city of Salvador, the state of Bahia and the central government of Brazil, and on the big businesses and industries, both Brazilian and international, to obtain the necessary funds to construct the theater of the ICBIE.

The photographs show the open space, with a sketch of a project elaborated by the Italian architect Luigi Serafini, and an unused internal space that was previously a deposit for (Italian!) bottled gas.
